ROAD SHOW 'OS ESPECIALISTAS' SHOWCASES SOUTH AFRICA

The South African Embassy was again part of the “Os Especialistas” Tourism Road Show for Portuguese travel agents.  The aim was to actively promote South Africa as a long haul tourism destination of choice in 5 Portuguese cities (Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon) from 18 to 22 April 2022.  Travel agents were excited to learn more about SA and to remind their clients that the country is ready to welcome tourists back!

EMBASSY PARTICIPATES IN 2022 BTL TOURISM FAIR

Following a 2-year hiatus due to Covid-19, Lisbon's BTL Tourism Fair (16-20 March 2022) was back and South Africa, through the Embassy and South Africa Tourism (SAT), participated with its biggest stand ever.  South Africa is more than ready to welcome international travellers back into the country and the BTL is a great opportunity to showcase the country's beautiful attractions.  Thank you to Paloma Telle from SAT (Paris) and Keith Matthews from KZN Tourism for travelling to Portugal to take part in the BTL and to local partners Accross tour operator, Novo Tours, ATR and Image Tours for their participation.  Lively entertainment was provided by marimba player and percussionast Zwai Mbula and singer Khule Manikivana.

MS ANA CORREIA WAS 'SHADOW' AMBASSADOR FOR A DAY

Ms Ana Correia, an intern at the Padre António Vieira Institute, was invited by the Association of Women Ambassadors to “shadow” Ambassador Gaoretelelwe for one day.  On 16 March 2022, Ms Correia was able to meet with the Ambassador in her office and follow her daily programme, which included a meeting with Ms Paloma Telle of South African Tourism, attending the opening of the BTL Tourism Fair and assisting the Ambassador where possible.  This is an important annual event that exposes young people to the work of an Ambassador.  Thank you Ms Correia for taking part in this initiative.

AMBASSADOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO SA SERVICEMEN IN LORIGA

Ambassador Gaoretelelwe paid a visit to the town of Loriga on 11 March 2022 to inspect and lay wreaths at the grave sites of four South African airmen.  The four were killed in WW2 when their Hudson bomber plane crashed in bad weather in 1944, into the Penha do Gato / Serra da Estrela mountains.  The Ambassador met with the President of the Parish Council of Loriga, Mr José Manuel Almeida Pinto, and together they inspected the grave sites and lay wreaths in honour of their memory.
