SOUTH AFRICA PARTICIPATES IN 'PORTUGAL EXPORTADOR' EVENT

The South African Embassy, led by Ambassador Gaoretelelwe, participated in the Portuguese Exportador event on 23 November 2022, which exposes Portuguese companies to export and investment opportunities abroad. The Embassy was further supported by the participation of Mr Jorge Maia, Head of the Research and Information Department of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) based in South Africa. Together with a South African stand, offering information on South Africa as a trade and investment destination, Mr Maia delivered a presentation to a invited group of Portuguese businessmen, titled: The emerging new energy landscape in South Africa. The positive responses from the Portuguese companies participating reflected an increased interest in South Africa’s economy and its development.

SOUTH AFRICA SHINES AT THE HIPHOP UNITE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022

South Africa joined 10 other countries in Óbidos, from 27-29 October, to participate in the Hiphop Unite World Championships 2022.  The delegation comprised of 86 people, which included dancers/athletes, coaches, judges and family members, made a big impression at the competition, with a duo and crew going on to win medals.  It was wonderful to see such a big and enthusiastic group bearing the South Africa’s colours so proudly.  Ambassador Gaoretelelwe was there to cheer the team on!  Thank you to Lynnette le Roux, President and Team Manager, for being on hand to explain all the technical nuances of this sport and for leading the team in Portugal.  Well done South Africa!!!

 

2ND PRIZE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN DOCUMENTARY “MUSIC IS MY LIFE – JOSEPH SHABALALA” AT THE 2022 ART & TUR TOURISM FILM FESTIVAL IN OURÉM

The Embassy is pleased to announce that the South African documentary film, “Music is my Life – Joseph Shabalala”, won 2nd prize at the 2022 Art & Tur International Tourism Film Festival that took place in the city of Ourém from 25-28 October, in the category of Music & Dance. Congratulations also go to Carolyn Carew and Free Women Films for producing this marvellous documentary.  Thank you to Carolyn for flying out to Portugal to receive the prize.  It was also a pleasure to see Caroline Ungersbock and Mike Rumble, both SA festival judges, at the event.  The Art & Tur participants also had the opportunity to embark on a South African wine experience – which included Amarula, Ceres juices and biltong - that was very well-received.   Congratulations to the Art&Tur organizing team for another great festival and a big thank you to all those who entered South African films!

 

 

CELEBRATION OF AFRICA DAY ON 25 MAY 2022

The Celebration of Africa Day took place on 25 May 2022, at the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon. Ambassador Gaoretelelwe led the South African Embassy, together with 15 other African Embassies and representative Offices, in the participation of the annual event. A number of South African artworks were placed on display for the 200 guests who included, representatives of the Portuguese Government as well as other important guests from Lisbon. Following the various speeches, guests were invited to savour the food and delicacies from each African country. A celebratory African Day was had by all!

ROAD SHOW 'OS ESPECIALISTAS' SHOWCASES SOUTH AFRICA

The South African Embassy was again part of the “Os Especialistas” Tourism Road Show for Portuguese travel agents.  The aim was to actively promote South Africa as a long haul tourism destination of choice in 5 Portuguese cities (Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Coimbra and Lisbon) from 18 to 22 April 2022.  Travel agents were excited to learn more about SA and to remind their clients that the country is ready to welcome tourists back!

EMBASSY PARTICIPATES IN 2022 BTL TOURISM FAIR

Following a 2-year hiatus due to Covid-19, Lisbon's BTL Tourism Fair (16-20 March 2022) was back and South Africa, through the Embassy and South Africa Tourism (SAT), participated with its biggest stand ever.  South Africa is more than ready to welcome international travellers back into the country and the BTL is a great opportunity to showcase the country's beautiful attractions.  Thank you to Paloma Telle from SAT (Paris) and Keith Matthews from KZN Tourism for travelling to Portugal to take part in the BTL and to local partners Accross tour operator, Novo Tours, ATR and Image Tours for their participation.  Lively entertainment was provided by marimba player and percussionast Zwai Mbula and singer Khule Manikivana. 

MS ANA CORREIA WAS 'SHADOW' AMBASSADOR FOR A DAY

Ms Ana Correia, an intern at the Padre António Vieira Institute, was invited by the Association of Women Ambassadors to “shadow” Ambassador Gaoretelelwe for one day.  On 16 March 2022, Ms Correia was able to meet with the Ambassador in her office and follow her daily programme, which included a meeting with Ms Paloma Telle of South African Tourism, attending the opening of the BTL Tourism Fair and assisting the Ambassador where possible.  This is an important annual event that exposes young people to the work of an Ambassador.  Thank you Ms Correia for taking part in this initiative.

                                                                                            

AMBASSADOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO SA SERVICEMEN IN LORIGA

Ambassador Gaoretelelwe paid a visit to the town of Loriga on 11 March 2022 to inspect and lay wreaths at the grave sites of four South African airmen.  The four were killed in WW2 when their Hudson bomber plane crashed in bad weather in 1944, into the Penha do Gato / Serra da Estrela mountains.  The Ambassador met with the President of the Parish Council of Loriga, Mr José Manuel Almeida Pinto, and together they inspected the grave sites and lay wreaths in honour of their memory.
