The two countries on 30 October 2020 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Pretoria, according to which Portugal will assist the Diplomatic Academy of the SA Department of Foreign Affairs (DIRCO) with Portuguese language training. This is one of the outcomes of the Bilateral Consultations held in August 2019 in South Africa and as discussed during the visit of the Portuguese Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva to South Africa during February 2020. The agreement was signed by the Portuguese Ambassador to South Africa M. Carvalho and DIRCO DDG M. Joyini.
The Portuguese language is recognised in the South African Constitution as one of the languages to be promoted and respected, while it is an official language of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU). This MOU forms an important part of Portugal’s continued promotion of its language in South Africa , which already includes the deployment of a number of Portuguese language teachers in SA schools and universities through the Camões Institute.
